NEW PRIEST APPOINTED AT NORTH BAY’S PRO-CATHEDRAL Diocese announces retirement of Msgr. Dave Tramontini who has served the Pro-Cathedral since 1995
NORTH BAY, ON - Bishop Thomas Dowd of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie announced today that he has appointed Fr. Larry Rymes as the new Pastor of the Parish of the Pro-Cathedral of the Assumption in North Bay, Ontario.
Fr. Rymes will succeed Msgr. Dave Tramontini, who recently presented his retirement to Bishop Dowd, which was accepted.
Fr. Rymes, currently the Pastor of Our Lady of Hope Church in Sudbury, Ontario, was born and raised in North Bay, Ontario, attending Holy Name of Jesus Church. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1992 and has served parishes in Blind River, Sault Ste. Marie, Greater Sudbury, and even served as assistant to Msgr. Tramontini at the Pro-Cathedral in 1995.
Msgr. Tramontini has served as Rector of the Pro-Cathedral since 1995 where he has worked with many bishops, priests, deacons and lay people alike, and celebrated countless baptisms, weddings and funerals. In 2004, Tramontini was made a “Prelate of Honour” by Pope John Paul II, which granted him the privilege of being addressed as “Monsignor”.
“I thank Msgr. Dave for his many years of service to the Pro-Cathedral and offer him my continued prayers in his retirement,” said Bishop Dowd, leader of the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie, “I also warmly welcome Fr. Larry Rymes to the Pro-Cathedral.”
The change in leadership at the Pro-Cathedral takes place September 1, 2021. A new pastor for Our Lady of Hope Church in Sudbury will be announced at a later date.

Who is Fr. Larry Rymes? Born and raised in North Bay, Ontario, Fr. Rymes was ordained a Catholic priest in 1992. He served churches in Blind River, Sault Ste. Marie, Val Therese, Sudbury and North Bay.
Why does a priest retire? Although Catholic priests do not retire from being an ordained priest of the church, they do retire from being the spiritual leader of a particular church community. Many priests in their retirement continue to serve in different ministries, or provide coverage for other active priests in ministry when they need to be away from their church.
